Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Anthony Shanks, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)Description: This is a concise reference to the many complications obstetricians may encounter in their critically ill pregnant patients.
Purpose: It is intended as a quick reference for obstetrical teams who care for critically ill pregnant women. The book is heavy on flow charts and algorithms, the background for each topic is sufficient, and the figures accentuate the material.
Audience: Obstetricians, residents, and other healthcare professionals responsible for obstetrical patient care are the intended readers. Specialists in many disciplines may appreciate the simplicity of the text and the clarity of the algorithms, including ICU physicians and cardiologists. The editors and authors are leaders in their fields.
Features: "Chapters use a logical, system-based presentation. The book is thorough with sufficient figures to help highlight the material. Among the notable chapters is the first one, which provides a nice overview of hemodynamic monitoring. It may be too detailed for general obstetricians, but it also could serve as an easy reference. I appreciate the acknowledgement of the decline in use of pulmonary artery catheters. Chapter 3 on postpartum hemorrhage is a great representation of the book as a whole. It provides a quick breakdown of the risks and successfully integrates tables and figures to help present the information. Table 3-3 could benefit by including the risk of accreta in patients with prior cesarean delivery and no history of previa. Chapter 5 also is well done, but figure 5-2 needs to be corrected because it does not show what it purports. Chapter 15 on acute fatty liver is a departure from other chapters as it focuses on differential diagnoses. "
Assessment: The most likely comparison is to Critical Care Obstetrics, 5th edition, Belfort et al. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008). Both books tackle complicated subjects, but Obstetric Intensive Care Manual seems designed to enable readers to absorb the material quickly and use its algorithms directly with patient care. Figures and tables communicate information efficiently and make the book a worthy addition to the field.
