In this popular history, Wandersee focuses primarily on the women's movement. The National Organization for Women and radical feminist groups receive special attention, and Wandersee then devotes chapters to education, work, and media. She argues that the dramatic changes in women's lives, due in part to the women's movement, generated a backlash that abetted the rise of the New Right. The scholarship is reliable, and no other book has yet synthesized this daunting wealth of material for the general audience. Despite some minor problems in writing and in chronology, essential for public libraries. Cynthia Harrison, American Historical Assn., Washington, D.C.Book Details
