Summarizes the current knowledge on the possibilities and limitations for a direct fixation of implants into bony tissue without the interposition of a soft tissue layer, the need for which was recognized nearly simultaneously and independently by orthopedic surgeons and dentists in the late 1960s. The seven papers in volume I contain theoretical treatments, and descriptions of orthopedic implant systems, and are of primary interest to bioengineers; the second of the 2v. set (unseen) is concerned entirely with implants in the head (and is presumably of more interest to clinicians). Topics include an overview of the field, criteria for the bioinertness of metals used in implants, biochemical aspects, the reaction of tissue to calcium phosphate ceramics, the FRIALIT total hip system, surface structured implants consisting of co-based alloys, and knee and ankle joint replacements.
