Two photographic board books created by Michel Blake, photos by Trish Gant, play up everyday activities in a toddler's world: Out to Play and Off to Bed. Against a b&w background, only the highlighted object appears in color, and only one per page. A boy plays with a red, yellow and blue "boat" on the left of a spread, and a yellow "truck" on the right. Bed depicts orange "socks" and a blue "shirt" about to come off, and a yellow "duck" and "sponge" in the tub. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

It is an outing in the park--a time to play on the swing, on the slide, to watch the ducks, to fly a kite, and even to have a picnic. The feature that makes this board book different is the way color is used. The photographs of the child's outing are black-and-white, but the activity or item featured in each scene is in color. Usually, there is one word per page identifying the colored item. The book could also be used by a parent or caregiver to introduce colors. The other feature of the book in the "Easy-Open" series is the different sizes of the pages. Little fingers will find it easier to grasp and turn the pages. 2005, Candlewick Press, Ages 18 mo. to 4.—Marilyn Courtot
