Reviewer: Julie A Warren, RN, MSN, CCRN(Presbyterian Healthcare Services)
Description: This is a succinct yet comprehensive guide to Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) in an accessible, pocket-sized format. It includes the current, research-based, knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and manage infants and children with potentially life-threatening illnesses.
Purpose: The purpose is to review the key knowledge and skills used in PALS, with additional information about pediatric illness and death statistics for the U.K. Each chapter has clearly listed objectives. This second edition reflects recent revisions to PALS guidelines.
Audience: It is written for all healthcare providers, at every level of expertise, who care for infants and children. The author has been a PALS instructor for many years and responds to pediatric arrests at his organization.
Features: This book covers the recognition of the seriously ill child, basic and advanced life support techniques including airway management, rhythm recognition and management, defibrillator use, and shock management/resuscitation. It covers all of the aspects of PALS, and every chapter has clearly listed objectives. Perhaps the only shortcoming is that the pictures are black and white and are of manikins instead of actual children. More information about sepsis, myocarditis, ductal-dependent cardiac lesions, and single-ventricle physiology management would have been helpful.
Assessment: As a PALS regional faculty instructor for the American Heart Association, I feel this U.K. book accurately reflects the revised PALS guidelines and meets its intent to serve as a pocket-sized guide for pediatric life support. This second edition is justified due to recent updates in the research concerning pediatric resuscitation and changes to the PALS guidelines.
