Gr 1-3-These retellings reduce stories about vibrant and active folk heroes to bland commentaries of achievements. Looking and sounding more like textbooks than entertaining tall tales, the books have double-columned text and include a glossary, index, fact sheet, list for further reading, and addresses for more information. Illustrations are bold, colorful, and generically flat. These books might be useful for unimaginative reports on one of these tall-tale heroes, but if you want lively stories with engaging illustrations, stick with the versions by Steven Kellogg (Morrow, 1984, 1986).-Nancy A.
