Reviewer:Christopher D. Anderson, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description:This is a comprehensive review of all solid organ transplantation in pediatric patients. It is an outstanding reference for the special considerations related to the immunologic, technical, and medical problems in this transplant patient population. This is a needed update from the first edition of 2000.
Purpose:The purpose of this edition is to update and expand upon the first edition text. Specifically, advances in the field are added and other portions are updated. This remains the only text devoted to pediatric transplant issues and as accomplishes the stated goals of the editors.
Audience:This book is aimed at residents, fellows, and attendings in both medical and surgical specialties who practice pediatric solid organ transplantation. It is written at an appropriate level by well known authors.
Features:This is a relatively broad topic, but the authors pay appropriate attention to recent advances and technical challenges in each field. The illustrations are of good quality, but unfortunately color illustrations are grouped at the center of the book which makes reviewing them while reading awkward.
Assessment:Unlike other textbooks of transplantation, this one addresses pediatric transplant issues. It serves to fill a void in the field and does not duplicate other books.
