Synopsis
Writing for students in communication disorders programs, Ball and Müller (U. of Louisiana at Lafayette) lead readers from the basics of spoken communication, through the mechanics of speech and the analysis of English pronunciation (with a concentration on American and British standards, but including other varieties of English), to the application of phonetics to the description and analysis of disordered speech. The text also introduces the transcription of speech into phonetic symbols and touches on the related field of phonology. It assumes no prior knowledge of the topic.
