From sunlight to the mighty oak tree, photosynthesis is explained. The energy captured by chlorophyll is combined with water and carbon dioxide to form glucose. This sugar is used to help the plants grow. Some of the glucose may be stored as starch for later use. Another product of photosynthesis is oxygen that people and animals breathe. Forest fires cause changes in the makeup of forests. Some plants thrive in the clear area created by the fire. Larger plants and growing trees crowd out these plants. Eventually the area is reforested. Different types of plants thrive in different areas due to the weather and its effects on food production. Because of the brevity of summer in high mountains, few annual plants are found there. Desert plants must protect themselves in ways to keep from losing too much water. Stunning photography emphasizes the information given here.
