Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Anne M. Buteyn, BS, CPFT(Rush Medical College of Rush University)Description: This textbook outlines routinely used pulmonary function tests and cardiopulmonary stress tests, including test indications, use of equipment, and interpretation of results.
Purpose: The purpose of the work is to serve as a textbook for pulmonary function and cardiopulmonary stress testing.
Audience: The textbook is primarily intended for respiratory care practitioners, cardiopulmonary function technologists, and other health care students and practitioners who must learn these tests as part of their professional training It can also be used as a general reference for health care practitioners and physicians.
Features: Each chapter is a self-contained study unit, with learning objectives and self-assessment questions directly related to the material covered in the section. The objectives are very basic and consequently require very little analytical thought on the part of the student. Important terms are highlighted in the textbbok and defined at the start of each specific chapter. Pulmonary function tests are clearly explained without involving a medical diagnosis that should be made by the physician. Illustrations are clearly presented and should be easily comprehended by the entry level student.
Assessment: The author has written a pulmonary function testing and cardiopulmonary stress testing textbook that would be easily understood by the targeted audience. It can be adapted as a textbook in a core curriculum or used as a general reference book. Even though an extensive bibliography is included, references for gaining further knowledge on specific topics are very limited and there is little mention of original work sources. The authors' style of presentation and liberal use of illustrations make the book a useful source of information for students and on-the-job practitioners. The book is reasonably priced. I recommend it for purchase by libraries, individuals, and bookstores.
