Look on the back of a one dollar bill and what do you see? A pyramid! Ninety pyramids were built by the ancient Egyptians in the desert. These are the ones that people recognize easily. However, ancient pyramids may be found all over the world; in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central America and South America! Journey through a study of pyramids of all kinds in this book that is divided into chapters focusing upon Pyramids of: Treasure, Power, Enlightenment and Sacrifice. Stunning photographs of pyramids from all over the world augment the textual descriptions and historical evolution. A glossary defining unfamiliar terms including "mastaba" and "sarcophagus" is found at the end of the book along with recommended books and websites for further research. Part of the "Wonders of the World" series that also include such titles as "The Easter Island Statues," "The Great Barrier Reef," and "King Tut's Tomb." The author is a professional editor and writer, enjoys researching her African American and Native American heritage and lives with her family in Kansas. An elementary social studies unit pertaining to ancient civilizations would benefit from the inclusion of this book. Highly recommended. 2005, Thomson Gale, Ages 9 to 12.

Gr 3-6-Pyramids introduces structures in ancient Egypt, Africa, Cambodia, and Mexico and is full of large, colorful photos and illustrations. Nardo covers the life of King Tut and devotes a chapter to speculation as to how he died, as well as the discovery of his tomb and its contents. Beautiful, colorful photographs and reproductions round out the nicely prepared text. Underwood discusses the geography, history, and people of Easter Island and of the statues, including who made them, how they were constructed, and what they represent. The last chapter includes information about their restoration and conservation. The illustrations include many full-page, full-color photographs and maps. A diagram shows how the Moai statues were moved from the quarry to the platform. Attractive, readable choices for general interest and reports.-Christine E. Carr, Lester C.
