Synopsis

Toucans, emerald tree boas and jaguars are just a few of the fascinating animals featured in their lush, green rain forest habitat.

Children's Literature

AGERANGE: Ages 4 to 7.

Lovely, detailed watercolor illustrations enhance this book about rain forest animals. The twenty-four-page book is broken into ten two-page chapters. The first chapter defines a rain forest and the following chapters tell about animals, including the orangutan, toucan, tapir, jaguar, sloth, and red-eyed tree frog. Each presents general information about the animal and goes into detail about its characteristics or habits. The inviting format shows three illustrations about the animal in circles on the right hand page. The text by each circle gives specifics about the animal. For instance, readers can learn about the sharpness and use of a toucan's beak when they read the text by the circles in the chapter about a toucan. The look, size, text amount, and interesting material make this an appealing read for youngsters. Kids will pick up the book on their own, and it will also work well as a supplement to science lessons. A simple word and picture index follows the text, as does a note for parents and teachers. This is a book in the "Who Lives Here" series. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
