The authors explain how forests come to be and how they change over time; their different layers; the insect and animal life they support; and present-day threats to them. Shaded pages interspersed throughout offer supplementary material on various subjects, e.g., an explanation of the petrified forest of Arizona, how a lake bed can evolve into a forest, maple syrup tapping, "strangler" vines, medicines derived from plants, careers in forestry, etc. Full-color photographs and graphs, while not spectacular, enhance the texts and supply useful additional information.-Helen Rosenberg, Chicago Public Library, IL
