Gr 6-9-- These two titles offer a no-frills approach to providing students with information on timely subjects. Each author presents a balanced treatment of the issue under discussion and gives carefully detailed background data and good basic historical information that outline the problems for today's environment. Black-and-white photographs highlight the text on most pages, and both books contain a suggested reading list. Unfortunately, the works consulted for researching these titles are not primary science journals or texts and are several years old; Rainforests does not list any titles more current than 1987, limiting its use for reports. While these books can be used as supplemental sources for reports, they will not readily attract avid nonfiction readers. --Susan Penny, St. Cecilia School, Houston
