Overview

As a young boy, Ray Bradbury always had a wild and vivid imagination. As he matured, he developed his own unique writing style and became a pioneer of science fiction and fantasy literature. Bradbury took his fascination with space, magic, and mystery and created new worlds that have captivated readers for decades. In addition to his literary success, Bradbury also pursued projects in both broadcasting and architecture. Since his first work was published in 1938, Bradbury has had more than 500 literary works published. Beginning his career with short science fiction stories, Bradbury successfully made the transition to novels with the publication of The Martian Chronicles. Shortly after, he followed with The Illustrated Man and Fahrenheit 451, which came to be known as Bradbury's greatest work. In this new title in the "Authors Teens Love" series, author Wendy Mass examines Bradbury's life and career, offering accessible insight into the works of this master of fantasy fiction.

Gr 6-9-Both of these books look fairly scholarly in that they are all black and white and shades of gray. The few photos are captioned, often dark, and merely decorative. Shaded sidebar quotes or information boxes most often repeat what is on or near the page on which they appear. Mass opens every chapter with a quote, many from Bradbury himself. Both books have a section titled "In His Own Words" that contains additional quotes from the featured writer. Tolkien's words are grouped by theme. Bradbury's responses came from an interview conducted by Mass. The author includes details about Bradbury's life that influenced his writing and notes his numerous awards and honors. In Tolkien, readers learn about the writer's accomplishments as well as his family. Both of these serviceable titles contain enough facts for report writers.-Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
