Children's Literature

Red Cloud has the distinction of being the only Native American chief to win a war against the United States government. By the 1800s, the Lakota Sioux, or Oglala, people have been living in what is now western Nebraska for hundreds of years. Expansion of the white man beyond the original 13 states, however, leads soldiers to forcefully take over the land. They wage battle and build forts to fend off attack from Native Americans as more settlers are on the move. By 1851 they realize they must find a way to get along. A treaty offers payment to the Native Americans in exchange for safe passage of white settlers moving into the territories of Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. But peace is tenuous. The discovery of gold in 1862 brings new challenges and threats. The white people want the land and gold. Red Cloud knows his people must resist. Throughout the book, the author capably weaves cultural and political details into the broad picture of western expansion. He also relays important influences into the character development of Red Cloud. For instance, as a young boy Red Cloud learns the ways of great warriors from his maternal uncle, Chief Smoke, and through the games and stories of the Sioux. Tribal battles give him firsthand experience with the art of war. Together with background notes, a short time line of events and other bibliographic references, this book in the "Native American Legends" series is a worthy resource and classroom staple. 2004, Rourke Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.
