Children's Literature

A handsome import from the Netherlands, this book includes painting and understanding activities for children (such as studying photos since birth to get a feel for Rembrandt's self-portraits), but is primarily a book about the artist himself and the times in which he lived. Among the clever innovations are pseudo newspaper pages relating events occurring in Amsterdam during the artist's lifetime. An accounting of the ambience of an artist's studio is well done, and good use is also made of excerpts from period accounts of Rembrandt. Thick glossy paper reproduces the paintings beautifully, and the overall design is enticing rather than too busy. The book is a cut above most introductory art books for kids and would make a welcome gift to young artists-and a welcome addition to both lower and middle school libraries. 2001, The J. Paul Getty Museum, $19.95. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

School Library Journal

Gr 3-7-A lively introduction to the life and work of the Dutch artist. The large size, varied page layouts, and beautiful reproductions result in an appealing book. Additionally, there are a number of interesting design elements such as the mock newspaper format used to convey the historical context of Rembrandt's time and a background map behind the discussion of distances and Holland's geography. Questions that encourage readers to stop and look more closely at certain paintings are interspersed with the narrative. Unfortunately, on several occasions they are placed on the following page, and it is cumbersome to look back. Activities are marked with a handprint when interspersed with the text and there are additional "Get busy" spreads. Though some projects are clear, others are too vague ("Ask someone to sit on a chair for you. Take a good look at their eyes, nose and mouth. See if you can draw them"). A few activities encourage writing in the book. This title is not intended for research but rather for providing an engaging introduction to Rembrandt, which it does quite successfully.-Robin L.
