Right Rose, Right Place
is an inspiring yet practical book that encourages both new and experienced gardeners to make the most of these lovely, versatile plants in hedges and privacy screens, on trellises, integrated into flower beds, as container plants, and in many more ordinary yard settings. Rose gardeners in colder climates will find ample information on hardy shrub and heritage roses, the backbone plants of the author's own garden in Ohio, where he grows 1,200 different roses. Easy to follow step-by-step instructions and more than 400 beautiful full-color photographs make Right Rose, Right Place a joy to read and implement.

Budding rosarians will find everything they need to successfully plant and grow a host of different cultivars. In addition, an extensive section on pruning and general maintenance, including how to deal with pests and diseases, equips rose gardeners with the know-how and skills to keep their new roses in tip-top shape. Right Rose, Right Place is the right book for growing and maintaining beautiful roses.

Library Journal

Location is often the key to success when growing roses. Garden writer and rose expert Schneider (coeditor, Combined Rose List) grows more than 350 varieties in his Ohio garden; here, he highlights the ones that have been successful. Organized by garden use instead of by class, the book profiles roses that can stand alone in the garden as well as those that grow in harmony with other garden plants. Because his own garden is in Ohio, Schneider highlights many hardy varieties, including shrub and heritage roses. Bedding and cutting varieties, miniature roses, climbing roses, tree roses, and roses for containers are selected with an encyclopedic entry that features a color photograph, lists of basic characteristics, and a two- or three-paragraph description. A "Right Place" note indicates where the rose will perform best and how it can be used in the landscape. In the final section, "Growing Roses," Schneider discusses buying, planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, and winter protection. Good how-to photographs demonstrate topics like transplanting a rose and pruning different types of roses. VERDICT This book will keep readers from being daunted by the prospect of rose gardening. Recommended especially for those new to rose growing.—Phillip Oliver, Univ. of North Alabama, Florence

Editorials

American Reference Books Annual

Schneider’s book speaks with authority the advice a rose lover needs for extending uses of one of the world’s favorite flowers...this work deserves a place on the shelves of public libraries and of rose lovers.

The American Gardener

His book could well change any notions you might have of these plants being fussy and frail.

The Philadelphia Inquirer

This is the rose encyclopedia I’ve sought. It speaks to the city gardener and has plenty for the landed gentry as well. To all, I’d say this is the perfect book to spend a day with before the season starts or as it unfolds.
