Purpose:The purpose is to provide nursing students with foundational concepts. This is a very worthy objective and the author, with the assistance of the contributors, has met that objective.

Features:The book is divided into three units. The first unit addresses the development of an individual as a professional and covers such topics as the philosophy of nursing, moral/ethical dimensions, and clinical judgment. The second unit focuses on the professional nurse as a provider of care and includes content on informatics and technology. The third unit addresses the role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team with emphasis on human resource management, quality management and the economics of healthcare.
Assessment:This is a good basic text on the subject of role development in professional nursing practice.
