Synopsis of Run, Remy, Run! (Ratatouille Series: A Step into Reading Book: Step 1)

Under tables, over carts, and through the dining hall—Remy the rat is on the run! But will this furry fan of fine foods get caught? Find out in this action-packed Step 1 reader based on the film Ratatouille!

Children's Literature

The text reminds me of the early readers about Dick and Jane and Spot—Run, Spot, Run or See Dick Play. It has that kind of rhythm. In this case, the story is a very brief encapsulation of the movie Ratatouille, the rat who reads and dreams of becoming a chef. All the basic elements are present: Remy arriving in the kitchen, helping the boy (not named but if you have seen the film you know it is Linguini) make some soup after he has concocted a smelly mess. It ends with the exclamation "That rat can cook!" The barebones story misses all the nuances of Remy's struggles and his friendship then falling out with Linguini and their final reconciliation and success. But it does succeed as an early reader because the illustrations provide excellent support to help decode the words, and the text is limited to just a few words per page. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
