School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up Ruth Marini (. . . of the Dodgers, . . . Dodger Ace both Lerner, 1983), the first woman in pro baseball, is back, and she wants to pitch her team through a winning season. But alas, Ruth has fractured her leg in the all-star game, and she's sidelined for the rest of the year. To dispell rumors that she has healed but is afraid to play, Ruth sets out to get herself off the disabled list and help the faltering Dodgers win the league pennant and ultimately the World Series against their arch-rivals, the Yankees. Although character descriptions are limited, Cebulash's latest hi/lo entry (which doesn't look it) moves along smoothly, with honest, snappy dialogue and a heroine fully capable of competing with men in professional sports. There's also true-to-life game action and romance. Those who enjoyed the others in the series, or who cheered Zan in Knudson's more difficult Zanbanger (Harper, 1977) and Judie in Boatright's Out of Bounds (Fawcett, 1982), will root for Ruth in her latest escapades.
