Synopsis
Poor Sassafras is self conscious of his stinky smell but his friends help him discover that his smell is what makes him special.
Children's Literature
Sassafras suffers from an extreme attack of adorableness. It's set in a happy little anthropomorphic kingdom where natural enemies (fox and squirrel, owl and rabbit) frolic together. The message- "We are who we're meant to be"-is couched in uninspired, overly precious text that condescends to children. In her woodland scenes, illustrator Harper is a bit too fond of the color purple-it shows up in the water, sky, trees and even the skunk's fur.
