Gr 4 Up The cover picture of this slim volume and the description in the introduction may be enough to convince squeamish readers never to set foot in a fairground again, but those who love roller coasters will experience the thrill of the ride. The first chapters tell the history of the roller coaster, and are enhanced by descriptions from contemporary newspapers and journals. The inclusion of dates, inventors, patent holders, and innovators do not hinder the pace of the clear, readable text. Anecdotes, such as the story of a man who hadn't spoken for six years, until he rode on the Cyclone and said, ``I feel sick,'' enliven the book. Later chapters elaborate on how modern coaster builders must have engineering and computer skills and take into consideration the biomechanics of the ride. The physics are explained well, and the steps for construction described, including the latest computerized safety devices. Some of the black-and-white photographs are murky, but they often do convey speed and disorienting excitement. Engravings of rides dating back as far as the 17th Century are also included. This fascinating book ends with a list, by state, of over 40 of America's best roller coasters that includes addresses to write to for further information.
