Synopsis

When Jared's starting soccer position is threatened by a new player, will he get his act together in time to save his reputation as top scorer

Children's LIterature

Young soccer fans will enjoy reading this fast-paced story about Jared and his efforts to regain his once perfect game. From the title, one would assume that the battle is among two teams, but it's actually more of an inner battle for Jared. Threatened by the talented new kid, Jose, Jared loses his esteemed field position as Jose out-scores him time and time again. As Jared's defensive attitude causes tension, he also loses his focus on soccer by not wanting to practice, and earns a low grade on a major school assignment by not studying. Since many students can probably relate to Jared's stubbornness in these aspects, this would be a good book for any young reader. This is especially so because of the realistic outcomes of Jared's actions. The realization that practice and cooperative team work vital to success finally reaches Jared, as he accepts Jose's offer to practice together. Familiarity with soccer rules and plays will help readers as the many details fill the story. But even those new to the sport will be able to appreciate the universal truths relating to cooperation, teamwork, and the importance of practice.
