Coming to us from the UK is this "Know Your Sports" series for serious beginning athletes. Unlike many such series, this book includes step-by-step instructions of specific moves and techniques, with accompanying photos (demonstrated, in this volume, by adult player-models). The book's first twelve two-page spreads introduce readers to the sport and its Laws of the Game, show a diagram of a soccer field, and discuss training and uniforms (special emphasis is given to soccer shoes). Other pages explain ball control and passing, in text and image. Two sections are devoted to the vital skills of running, dummying, dribbling, and attacking, while two more cover goal scoring and defending. Later spreads explain the art of clean tackling and the special talents of goalkeepers. Pages are spacious and neatly designed, and the text is succinct, although it is clumsy in its use of singular and plural pronouns. Players and spectators alike will appreciate a sprinkling of color photos and information about soccer stars like the famous Pele, American Mia Hamm, Italian Paolo Maldini, and Brazil's Marta. A final spread lists statistics about World Cup winners and goals scored as well as a glossary of soccer terms and some appropriate websites. This series could be helpful for individual players or used as a supplement in a school sports program. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Here in the United States, soccer is the name given to a sport that many in the world call football. It is a team game with eleven players on a side and you can use any part of your body to move the ball except your hands and arms. A game is made up of two halves with a short fifteen minute break between them. The basics of the game are explained and depicted in photographs. There are fact boxes on many spreads that provide some interesting trivia about the sport, fans, players, gear, game winning goals and more. A diagram shows the field and the players and explains how the game starts and what happens when a ball goes out of bounds and describes what the various players can and cannot do. Top players are real stars like David Beckham. Gifford describes the various moves and how to control the ball and the difference between attacking and defending along with the special role of the goalkeeper. Full color photographs enliven this story of one of the world's most popular sports. The book closes with a list of web sites, two book references, a list of soccer words and their definitions, and an index. Part of the "Tell Me About…Sports" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

School Library Journal

Gr 3–5β€”Each book gives a typical overview of the rules of the game before concentrating on the specific skills needed to succeed, such as catching and batting a baseball or relay-racing and hurdling. Superstars in each field are mentioned in a few sentences. Colorful photographs of boys and girls enjoying the sport enhance the text. The books are similar in scope to the "In the Zone" series (Weigl) but not as detailed in step-by-step execution as the "Skills in Motion" series (Rosen). Update an older collection by selecting from the various sports offered.β€”Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
