Reviews current methods for soil physical analysis, considering application accuracy, measurement time, ease of use, and cost of equipment. Each chapter provides the underlying theory as well as the limitations, reliability, and applications of various methods to facilitate the selection of appropriate techniques for specific applications. Fifteen contributions from academics in soil science and related fields discuss topics such as time- and frequency-domain methods for measuring water content, matric potential, penetrometry, and soil thermal properties. The second edition includes new chapters on the measurement of infiltration, soil strength and friability, and soil profile evaluation and description, and expanded information on soil-atmosphere exchange of environmentally important gases, including radon and greenhouse gases. Editors Smith and Mullins are with the U. of Edinburgh and the U. of Aberdeen (Scotland), respectively. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
