Gr 5-7-- A look at the ethnic and cultural diversity of the various states that comprise the USSR. The book's value lies in its presentation of very recent history. Covering up through the first quarter of 1990, timely issues such as the move for independence in the Baltic states (specifically Lithuania), problems with pollution, economic troubles, and the changing role of religion are discussed in a clear, reportorial manner. Although a brief overview only, this is good of its kind. Black-and-white photos and maps generally extend the text, although occasionally their placement is odd. For example, a photo of Lenin and Stalin is set in text that describes the natural resources of Transcaucasia. Taken as a whole, however, the book provides a succinct overview of the current social, political, and economic climates in the USSR. John Bradley's Soviet Union: Will Perestroika Work? (Gloucester, 1989) is Fannon's closest competitor, but the former covers only the narrow issue of perestroika, and is certainly not as up-to-date. --Ann Welton, University Child Development School, SeattleBook Details
