Children's Literature

This book is part of a series Entitled "Insects and spiders' that includes books about beetles, moths and butterflies, bugs, flies, and dragonflies. Beginning with what a spider is, this book discusses its habitats, life cycle, predators, and defenses. The meanings of words written in bold print can be found in the glossary. A table of contents, an index, and a quiz at the end of the book help make the book a useful tool for student research. The photographs are plentiful, with lots of details and interesting variations. "Fascinating Facts" and "Did you know?" information is written on green and yellow leaves throughout the book. One of the fascinating facts was that there are about 2,000 kinds of spiders in Australia! Readers will be interested in the sections on "Weird and wonderful spiders" and another section that explains how to find spiders to watch. This book is a good resource not only for research purposes, but also for those who just want to enjoy a closer look at the spider's world. 2002 (orig. 2001), Chelsea House Publishers, Ages 8 to 12.
