Children's Literature - Jennie DeGenaro

Jennifer Reed's informative 118-word book on submarines is more instructive than you would imagine from such a limited text. The photographer has done a superior job of picturing these large machines with such skill they appear lifelike and readers feel they have seen the real thing. Parts of submarines are pictured and explained. One full-page picture of a sailor shows him at work. This "Mighty Machines" series of books supports national social studies standards that relate to science, technology and society. The book's "Table of Contents" reveals there are four chapters, while the "Glossary" explains words that may be unfamiliar to young readers, and the "Read More" section includes two books for further reading. The "Internet Sites" will be helpful when readers use this resource for reference purposes. The index will be helpful in locating material in this book. Elementary schools will find it advantageous to have this series of books in their libraries. This gives youngsters the opportunity to learn about machines that are used on farms, in cities, and in the military. Reviewer: Jennie DeGenaro
