School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-In these serviceable biographies, the authors open with an episode from the sluggers' careers; the remaining chapters detail their lives, emphasizing their years playing the game. Despite relating occasionally interesting incidents, the lackluster writing limits the volumes' appeal beyond basic report fodder. Each book concludes with a picture of the Hall of Fame plaque next to a few pages of statistics. Black-and-white and a few full-color photographs from the era are scattered throughout. Some seem questionably chosen and break readers' concentration on the player's life. Even though the font size is large, some pages appear dense with text. Fans who want anything they can get about the lives of their favorite Hall of Famers will be the most likely audience for these titles.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
