Synopsis of The Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music
"The Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music bears witness to a comprehensive rethinking of the history and historiography of world music...the publication of the Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music marks the beginning of a new age of ethnomusicology and world music in the twenty-first century." From the foreword by Philip V. Bohlman, President of the Society of Ethnomusicology, 2005-2007, as well as author and editor of numerous books on world music
The Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music is an adaptation of the Dartmouth Medal winning Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, with contributions by the leading scholars in ethnomusicology marking the first half-century of the discipline's modern history. The new Concise edition will appeal to a more general audience, including libraries, high-school classrooms or the personal collections of world music enthusiasts. Comprised of two volumes, the Concise Garland adopts the geographic approach of the original ten-volume set. Each section begins with an introduction that covers the region's broad culture and music. Articles describe the unifying aspects of a region's music, especially its instruments, genres, or theories, and are followed by several essays devoted to a region's individual music cultures. Two audio CDs offer musical examples from regions around the world.
Whether you are new to the study of world music, an avid concert-goer, a musician, or already well-versed in ethnomusicology, you will want to consult the Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music for quick, reliable and enjoyable reference.
Nadine Cohen - Library Journal
This title condenses the well-known and monumental ten-volume scholarly survey of the same name into two relatively slim volumes. The geographic breadth of the original has been maintained, while the depth has been adjusted in terms of length and readability for a general academic audience. Like the original, this work is organized geographically, with Volume 1 covering Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania and Volume 2 covering the Middle East and Asia. Each section begins with an introductory essay on the region's culture and history, providing background context for the articles that follow on individual musical cultures. Some of the more technical articles from the original have been eliminated, while others have been adapted to exclude the more esoteric aspects of ethnomusicology. The glossary in each volume has been expanded as well. A vast number of local and international scholars have contributed to this work, not only ethnomusicologists but anthropologists, linguists, cultural historians, folklorists, composers, and performers. The articles are generously accompanied by photos, maps, diagrams, and musical notations and end with a brief, up-to-date bibliography. Each volume has an accompanying CD with selected audio examples that are keyed to the related sections of the text. The CD does not provide any title or other identification for these musical samples; one must refer to the text, where disc and track numbers are provided in the margins, or to the "Notes on the Audio Examples" at the end of Volume 2. BOTTOM LINE Libraries that already subscribe to Oxford Music Online (formerly Grove Music Online) or own the 29-volume New Grove Dictionary of Music andMusicians will find a good deal of overlap with this title, although there is also much that is complementary. Recommended for a wide range of music reference collections. Nadine Cohen, Univ. of Georgia Lib.
