Overview

In this age of electronics we marvel at the wonders of computer systems that run everything from shuttle launches to vast communications netwoks. Yet the human body, with its thousands of genes that provide a unique code of life for each individual, is equipped with systems far more efficient than the most advanced computers and their programs.

This series explores eight major human body systems. The authors clearly describe the main parts of each system and tell how the system works. They discuss problems that may affect it and consider recent treatments and cures for diseases. Color illustrations add visual impact to the text.

Human Body Systems provides an informative look at what we know about the human body today and emphasizes the importance of maintaining good health.

Gr 6-8Through clear texts, many useful diagrams, extensive glossaries, and interesting timelines of humankind's knowledge of muscles and nerves, the Silversteins have once again made the science of life accessible to young readers. The first title begins with locomotion of animals and plants in water, air, and on land, and then moves on to the human muscular system. Disorders and diseases are discussed, as are exercise and rehabilitation. The second title covers the specialization of each cell and explains the parts of the brain and what they control. Memory, intelligence, and how drugs affect the mind are also discussed. The full-color photographs are quite small in both books, but sidebars are interesting and well placed. The ``How Our Bodies Work'' series (Silver Burdett, 1988) offers similar information for the same audience.Kathleen McCabe, East Meadow Public Library, NY
