Synopsis

Discusses the history, development, habits, and care of Siamese cats.

Children's Literature

The books in this series "Learning about Cats" follow a standard format and have nearly identical text in chapters four and five, which discuss owning and caring for the particular breed of cat. Each book opens with a spread that provides quick facts, and in this title, it is about Siamese cats, including their size, weight, physical features, and more. Kids will learn about the history of the breed and the qualities of Siamese. They enjoy being around people and do not like to be alone. While the writing is not very exciting, one of the real joys of this and other titles in the series are the many wonderful photographs. The outstanding cover picture is enough to entice anyone to open the book. The concluding pages contain a photo with the major features of the cat labeled, a quick facts list, words to know, a short but reasonably up-to-date list of related titles, and other resources plus Internet sites. There is an index. 2001, Capstone, $21.26. Ages 7 to 12. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
