Synopsis

Elmer Goodhand was in the golden years of his life. After years of hard work, he should be relaxing in the quietness of his Georgia farm and reading the books filling the shelves in his study. But life had thrust at him a cutting blow. His beloved wife died; his only daughter became involved with drug dealers, leaving her infant daughter with Elmer. That was five years ago. Now, Jo returned and wanted to take Spice away to a world of drug trafficking and criminals. Elmer's refusal jabbed the insidious finger of danger into his quiet life. The web closed tighter around the old man and Spice as a killer and his dangerous associates hunted for them as they hid out in cellars, barns and a hot, foreboding swamp filled with quicksand, alligators, poisonous snakes, and wild killer dogs. This is a story of one man's devotion for a child and her worship of the one who is her world. Hauntingly and brilliantly, it portrays in a unique tenderness, the best of us and the worst of us.

Cindy Sendall

"In this contemporary novel, Jack P. Jones has created an attractive likable set of characters. You want very much for "Poppy" to keep Spice from a determined and ruthless enemy. His success will depend on a creative but risky strategy that takes him deep into the trackless swamp." — from Cindy Sandall, author of Texas Video Series for Texas History Students. Series include Texas Indians, Ancient Texas Indians, Texas Indian Ancestors, Texas Geography, and others.
