Although book recommendation guides are numerous, this British import will be useful in many teen collections. The entries (predominantly fiction) are arranged by title, and each lists an age range, a description/recommendation, and suggestions for read-alikes. The lively black-and-white layout, peppered with cover art, will appeal to browsing teens. Also notable are the authors-each entry was submitted by a different author, editor, or teen reviewer, ensuring a wide spectrum of entries. The majority of the entries seem to be adult fiction, classics, and British teen fiction, although American teen and tween books are included. Although this book browses well and has a unique review approach, readers should be aware of its weaknesses. Because many contributors write the reviews, the summaries are uneven, some being more raves than reviews. Although it lists older books and publication dates are absent, its scope is current. There are author and contributor indexes, but a genre index would be useful because teens often browse in this manner. Mini-features sprinkled throughout the book explore genre, but they give a taste more than a comprehensive guide. Not every book will be a teen's idea of pleasure reading (Lord of the Flies and Great Expectations scream assigned reading), but the reviewers' enthusiasm and jumping design will convince many teens to delve its pages for new reading choices. Gr 7 Up- This attractive volume includes reviews of more than 700 fiction titles, nonfiction, classics, and graphic novels that will be of interest to young adults. The reviewers/contributors are popular authors, librarians, and teens themselves. Brief entries of one half to one page per title are easy to read with black-and-white images of book covers, suggested ages, and additional recommendations included. The lively reviews are sorted alphabetically by title, indexed by author, and cross-referenced throughout the volume. Teen readers poll results and short articles on specific genres are interspersed among the entries, and all of the contributors are profiled at the back of the book. This book is easier to access than Nancy Pearl's Book Crush (Sasquatch, 2007). It's an excellent source for a variety of book reviews spanning time and genre.
