Children's Literature

The life and career of Ulysses S. Grant is a study in contrasts. A man who struggled as a young soldier and was forced to resign his commission, Grant also worked to be a strong husband and father. The coming of the Civil War in 1861 served to both sunder the republic and resurrect Grant's career. During the war, Grant rose to the highest military rank in American history. At Appomattox Court House Grant accepted Lee's surrender and effectively ended the Civil War. In the post-war years, Grant was elected to the presidency for two terms although they were less than stellar in nature. Here, in a well-written and cleverly constructed biography, readers will be able to come in touch with the life and times of Ulysses S. Grant. Written in an engaging style, this book features a very innovative twist. Numerous web sites are chronicled that deal with aspects of Grant's' life. In addition, many of the illustrations are shots of period photographs inclusive of the web site information they were drawn from. Youngsters interested in Grant will find this book, and the sources it includes to be valuable reading. Part of the "Presidents" series.

Gr 5-9-These titles compare favorably with those in the "Spirit of America: Our Presidents" series (Child's World) in scope, readability, and visual appeal, and have the advantage of the added Web sites. In Grant, Alter begins with Appomattox, and then backtracks to the president's early life. His unpopularity and undeserved reputation are mentioned several times. In Adams, Feinstein, too, takes a key event, Amistad, as the starting point, and then relates Adams's early life, political career, presidency, and final years. Several pages of annotated sites follow. The texts feature many color photographs, some from the Internet and with the toolbars (including the URL) showing. These books are thoroughly researched and strongly supported by Web sites.-Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
