Children's Literature -
As with its rich plant life, China is home to a great variety of vertebrates with over 100 animal species that are unique to China. Such diverse animals as the internationally known giant panda, the elusive snow leopard, the Sichuan pheasant, and the domestic silkworm are just a few that are discussed in this volume of the six-book "Land, Life and Culture" series. Wildlife conservation in China often comes into conflict with the development of its economy, but enormous strides toward preservation of wildlife have been made in the last few decades. Today, countries around the world are helping China to save and develop its abundant wildlife, and hundreds of wildlife breeding centers have been set up throughout the country. For each animal discussed, its behavior and diet are noted, as is its ranking of critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species published by the World Conservation Union. Some of the critically endangered species in the wild include the Chinese alligator, the South China Tiger, the Bactrian camel, and the Chinese Paddlefish. The ancient history of both the bee and the silkworm are included here, as is a discussion of the twelve animals signs found in the Chinese horoscope and step-by-step instructions for making silk. "Did You Know?" and "For your Information" fact boxes provide additional or background information and beautiful and plentiful wildlife photography adds interest. A glossary and index are included, and glossary words have been bolded in the text for easy identification. Reviewer: Margaret OrtoBook Details
