Night Owl Romance

Some would find it hard to write the sequel to a great book like Marked, but the Cast women obviously didn't have that problem. I laughed, sighed, and definitely cried. I thought that I knew where this series was headed but the authors took me completely by surprise. Congrats to P.C. and Kristin Cast, on a fantastic job. Bring on Chosen!

Children's Literature

This story continues from the first book, Marked, in this seven-book "House of Night" series. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is in training at the boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after she changes from a human to a vampyre. She becomes the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group. Zoey is determined to find new direction for the group. This story has a very dark tone as human teenagers are being killed, and the vampyres are at the top of the list of suspects. Do the powers Zoey possesses threaten those whom she loves? She must deal with her mentor's duplicity and the subsequent tragic events which engulf her. Her best friend Stevie Rae rejects the required Change from human to vampyre and dies in Zoey's arms. Zoey learns that her former human boyfriend, Heath, is targeted, and endeavors to prevent his death. Her flirtation with a college professor distracts from the story. There is more than enough conflict without this intrusion. The language and sexual content are not for younger readers, and may even be inappropriate for some young adults. The anti-religious emphasis will be disturbing for readers who do not share this view. The setting in Oklahoma is incongruous for both a vampyre boarding school and the anti-religious tone. The time is indistinguishable, but not an important factor in the plot. Reading the first book in the series before starting this story will allow the reader to understand better the characters and plot. The other books in the series include: Chosen, Untamed, Hunted, Tempted, and Burned. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
