Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Daniel B. Hier, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book provides a detailed description of the new field of neuro-urology.
Purpose: It aptly defines and summarizes the new field of neuro-urology. Neuro-urology encompasses a variety of sphincter disturbances, including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and impotence, that have a neurological origin.
Audience: This book will be of interest to neurologists, physiatrists, urologists, and gynecologists.
Features: The book is divided into three major sections: basic studies, investigations, and clinical problems. Three introductory chapters in the basic studies section review neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuropathology. This is followed by three chapters on investigating the patient with a neuro-urological complaint. The book concludes with 10 chapters on clinical problems in neuro-urology such as incontinence and impotence.
Assessment: The editor has done an excellent job by bringing together disparate information on neuro-urology into a single text. Neuro-urological problems are frequent, yet difficult to diagnose and manage. This book represents a good beginning toward the rational diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.
