Reviewer:Mary Fines Ricardo-Dukelow, MD(Univ of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine)
Description:This is a compilation of articles written for biomedical scientists. The book has five major sections -- introduction, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycology. The 72 chapters provide brief introductions to the world of medical microbiology.
Purpose:The author states the purpose is to compile many of the articles that he has written over the past 10 years for The Gazette, now known as Biomedical Scientist, a publication of the Institute for Biomedical Science. The book is intended for biomedical students as a brief introduction to the world of medical microbiology. Essentially, the author meets this objective; however, there are other books that accomplish the same objective of providing a concise resource for introducing medical microbiology.
Audience:According to the author, the book is intended for biomedical students. The book may be useful to any medical practitioner. The author, a trained biomedical scientist, holds two honorary positions at the University of Glasgow as a research fellow in the Faculty of Medicine and as a senior research fellow in the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences. He also is well published and clearly is a credible authority of this subject.
Features:The best feature of the book is that many chapters include a brief history of how the organism was first discovered and the epidemiology regarding the impact the disease has had on the world. The author has a unique style of revealing the highlighted characteristics of each microorganism. He then briefly discusses the clinical manifestations and epidemiology. The shortcomings are that the chapters are brief and, in some respects, this can be distracting. There are few illustrations, which could have been used effectively to emphasize the features of certain organisms.
Assessment:The book is a quick introduction to microbiology. There are other similar books, but the author's unique style may be an attractive feature to some readers.
