They say a picture is worth a thousand words -- or in this case, a thousand home ideas -- and this new book...bears out the concept... It covers a variety of home categories: windows and doors, flooring, stairways, kitchens, storage, walls, lighting, colour and texture, outdoor spaces and more. But don't look for straightforward how-to decorating advice in this lavishly printed volume...The intent is purely inspirational, to spur readers to develop ideas for their own interiors based on the set pieces found on its pages. Part of what makes the book fun is the freedom with which the authors have chosen to illustrate each category; most of the interiors and details depicted in the photos are hardly stiff, art-directed showcases, but come from the homes of real, albeit imaginative individuals with highly specific quirks and preferences. And many of the photos and layouts make for sumptuous compositions in themselves, whether you're into redecorating or not. All in all, a great source for both casual dipping or more focused reading on a rainy afternoon.

The clever premise of this design book is the themes that form the basis for each chapter, including shelves, floors, doors and windows, color and texture, and cooking and eating, among others. For each, interior design specialist Cliff offers a page of thoughts and suggestions on the theme then fills the rest of the chapter with many examples in scintillating photos taken by Sarramon in houses throughout Europe. The photos are presented in full-page plates or, more often, with many photos per page, and all without captions, so that the reader focuses entirely on the visual.
