Children's Literature
A twisted snake, a fat seal, and a hungry crocodile are just some of the fun animal sculptures readers of this book will learn how to make from common materials such as clay, foil, and paper bags. Each of the first six animals introduces a new sculpting term, such as form, armature, and balance, with the final sculpture--a giant dinosaur--putting all of these into practice. Color photographs illustrate the process, showing the finished animal as well as individual steps. General directions are broken down into three numbered steps and followed with finishing details on the next page. A basic list of supplies is given at the beginning of the book, but individual projects do not include specific lists of materials, which some may find frustrating. A note to parents and teachers at the end of the book includes ideas for further exploring these basic sculpting techniques, as well as suggestions for improving the experience, such as focusing on the process and allowing for mistakes and creativity. While some may find the lack of specificity in the instructions frustrating, wise adults will use the book to teach basic principles while allowing their budding artists to cultivate their own sense of design.
