Library Journal

Kimber, a writer for Country Journal , offers this delightful collection of essays about wilderness canoeing. While neither a how-to guide nor a chronicle of an event, his collection conveys a contagious enthusiasm for the outdoors. While Kimber's essays can be informative for beginners, they are meant to be read for pure enjoyment. One essay in particular stands out, ``The QNS&L,'' which is an account of the Quebec, North Shore, and Labrador Railroad, and a description of the trip from Esker to Sept Iles, Quebec. Many of the topics Kimber writes about can also be found in Garret Conover's Beyond the Paddle ( LJ 7/91) in greater detail. This wonderful book will appeal to armchair outdoorspeople as well as the most avid canoeists. Recommended for most outdoor collections, especially in the Northeast.-- Donald H. Dederick, SUNY Health Science Ctr., Brooklyn
