Overview

Because they bear the brunt of our contact with the outside world, hands and feet can take quite a battering. Given their long years of hard service, they ought to be pampered at every opportunity. And yet most women don't dedicate even a fraction of the time looking after their feet and hands as they spend cleansing, toning and moisturising their faces. Graceful, silky hands and beautiful nails are much-prized physical attributes. Supple hands and trim, healthy nails speak volumes about our state of health and personal grooming. And new fashion trends have put the focus firmly back on pretty feet. A Complete Guide to Manicure and Pedicure takes a practical and visual approach to hand and foot care, with lots of DIY information, tips and practical advice as well as insights from podiatrists, chiropodists, nail technicians, beauty therapists and cosmetic houses.

Synopsis

Equally useful to beauty professionals, cosmetology students, and those who want to achieve expert results at home, the practical instruction and extensive illustrations provided here demonstrate all there is to know about properly grooming the hands, nails, and feet. Beginning with the internal structure of the feet, hands and nails, the instruction continues with the selection and proper use of nippers, cuticle scissors, softeners and creams, files, and other essential tools. The French manicure technique, application of acrylic nails and tips, using nail wraps, and emergency fixes for broken nails are all included. Also featured are spa and salon manicure and pedicure routines, foot and hand massage and reflexology techniques, and professional secrets for a perfect polish.

Library Journal

Toselli's book will be useful for readers who wish to learn manicure and pedicure techniques. The author has had experience as a model and as a beauty and fashion editor, though not as an aesthetician. Her editorial work has appeared in publications such as Marie Claire and Elle, and she consulted for the What Not to Wear series on the BBC. Toselli includes information on hand and foot muscles and bones and massage techniques for both. The illustrations will make this a useful volume for the nonprofessional reader who wishes to perform home treatments and understand some salon treatments. There are clear, well-documented instructions along with data on common foot and hand problems. A good purchase for public libraries wishing to update their collection, or for those wishing to expand one. Shelley Brown, Richmond P.L., Vancouver, BC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
