Synopsis
The daily life of a cowboy in the Old West was not as glamorous as legend would have it. Cowboys endured an endless cycle of hard, dirty, dangerous work, from the spring roundup through the cattle drive, the end of the trail, and the return south. Still, the romantic and appealing aspects of life in the Old West have created in the cowboy an indelible American icon.Editorials
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Topics covered in this book's four chapters and introduction include: "Cowboy Dress and Manner," "The Roundup," "The Trail Drive," and "Back at the Ranch." The opening paragraphs explain the history of the American cowboy, including the influence of the Mexican vaqueros, while the chapter on dress explores the importance of the different types of cowboy hats and the usefulness of long johns and bandannas, among other articles of clothing. "The Roundup" describes a typical work day, culminating with the Trail Drive, in which the trail boss, wranglers, point riders, swing riders, and others drove the cattle to "cow towns" on their way to markets in the East. This book is an acceptable introduction to cowboy life in the Old West, although it is not a standout. It provides some basic information, much of which can be found in other sources.
