Overview

At long last, Inspector Douglas Roper is able to get away from England to Greece for a much-needed vacation. He spends his mornings at an archeological dig in Crete, and his afternoons sightseeing with Miss Carmody, an attractive and intelligent woman, with an alluring aura of independence. But Roper's peaceful, idyllic holiday is interrupted when he discovers Mrs. Gribo, one of the guests at his hotel, brutally murdered in her ransacked room. In the midst of his easy romance, with Mrs. Gribo's murder unsolved, Roper reluctantly returns to work in rainy Dorset, where nothing appears to have changed in his absence. When the body of Albert Haddowes is discovered, murdered in his armchair and dead for a week or more, Roper discovers that the strands of two investigations intertwine. He is left with a complicated knot to untangle, and a romance that goes beyond his cautious expectations.
