Overview

Outstanding text treats numerical analysis with mathematical rigor, but relatively few theorems and proofs. Oriented toward computer solutions of problems, it stresses errors in methods and computational efficiency. Problems β€” some strictly mathematical, others requiring a computer β€” appear at the end of each chapter.

This is an unabridged republication of the second edition of a work that was first published in 1965 by McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York. It treats numerical analysis with mathematical rigor, but presents a minimum of theorems and proofs. Oriented toward computer solutions of problems, it stresses error analysis and computational efficiency, and compares different solutions to the same problem. Following an introductory chapter on sources of error and computer arithmetic, coverage includes approximation and algorithms, interpolation, numerical differentiation and numerical quadrature, and the fast Fourier transform. Ralston is affiliated with the State University of New York; Rabinowitz with Weizmann Institute of Science. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
