PreS-Gr 2-This book takes youngsters out on the ocean in a small commercial fishing boat, where they are shown the one-man crew's instruments and equipment and see him setting out his net, trawling, bringing in the catch, picking the deck, and heading back to the dock. He then prepares his haul to sell to the vendors, who in turn sell the fish in a market in the city. The various tasks are clearly explained in a simple text and illustrated with soft watercolor-and-pencil paintings. This elegant addition to Florian's fine series about various occupations will have special appeal in areas where fishing is part of the local economy.-Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WIMary Harris Veeder
This latest entry in the How We Work series follows a fisher from early in the morning to late at night. The boat shown in the watercolor-and-pencil drawings is a small one with a lone man aboard. Later, a dockworker is added to the illustrations. The simple story depicts the physical strength and know-how as well as the special equipment and clothing needed to fish. A final note, explaining that most fishers work to help conserve the fish supply, might have been better placed at the front of the book.Book Details
