Children's Literature
With a mix of photos and retro-style drawings and font, this well-designed book offers one to four "space" words per letter. Short and simple definitions make this a fun learning book. The words are an interesting combination of scientific terms (Ignitionstarting of engines for launch), little known facts (Norway and the Netherlands are helping to build the International Space Station), and stuff kids love to know ("Vomit Comet"NASA plane for weightless training). The mixture of serious and silly (golf balls left on the moon by Shepard) will help hold young readers' interest and most likely lead to a desire to know more. Most letters have their own page, with a few rating double-page spreads. The eye flows easily from image to image, letter to letter; all photos and drawings are credited at the end of the book. Unfortunately the recent "demotion" of Pluto makes the Planet page already out-of-date. The cover and endpapers will draw children in, as will the quiz on the back flap.
