Overview
Popular among readers of early printed fiction was the story of a merchant's wife who transformed the misfortune of exile into an opportunity for adventure. Using Boccaccio's rendering as a backdrop, this study of four chapbook versions uncovers links between the themes of the story-fortune, merchant ethics, and women's roles-and the concerns of early modern city dwellers. The author also focuses on the experimental quality of narrative prose in the early printing years.Editorials

A Dutch-based translator and language teacher, Scholz examines various renditions of a popular tale wherein a merchant's wife transforms the misfortune of exile into an opportunity for adventure. She takes Boccaccio's version as a backdrop and finds links between the themes such as fortune, merchant ethics, and women's roles and the concerns of early modern city dwellers. She also considers the experimental quality of narrative prose in the early days of printing. Her study was first presented as a Ph.D. dissertation for Indiana University in 1993. Annotation c.
